Beirut

Beirut @ Fix Factory of Sound | 30.05.16

Beirut is an American indie-rock and world music band which was originally the solo musical project of Zach Condon (born Zachary Francis Condon in Santa Fe, New Mexico) and later expanded into a band. The band’s first performances were in New York, in May 2006, to support the release of their debut album, Gulag Orkestar.

Condon recorded before Beirut was established: when he was fifteen and under the name of Realpeople, he made an electronic record, fashioned after his love for The Magnetic Fields. Condon was a straight-A student until he dropped out at the age of 17 to travel Europe with his cousin in a drunken haze, cavorting and partying with the locals wherever he ended up. It was during one of these evenings that he was first exposed to Balkan music (notably including the Boban Marković Orkestar and Goran Bregović), blasting from the upstairs apartment. Condon ended up with the Serbian artists all night, going through albums country by country, note for note.

The first album under the Beirut moniker, Gulag Orkestar (2006), was the direct result of what he learned that night. While it may sound like an entire Balkan orchestra playing modern songs as mournful ballads and upbeat marches, the album was performed and recorded almost entirely by Condon alone. He did so on Pro Tools while skipping school in Albuquerque and at Sea Side Studios in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Jeremy Barnes added percussion and some violin overlays.

After recording, Condon formed a full band which at times varies in the number of members, from six to ten. Live he is accompanied by Perrin Cloutier (cello/accordion), Jason Poranski (guitar/mandolin/ukulele), Nick Petree (drums), Kristin Ferebee (violin), Paul Collins (organ/keys/tambourine/ukulele), Jon Natchez (baritone sax/mandolin/glockenspiel), and Kelly Pratt (trumpet/euphonium).

In November 2006 Condon was “briefly hospitalized for extreme exhaustion”, the band’s website said, and as a consequence the band cancelled the rest of the tour. They resumed performing in March 2007 and released their second album, The Flying Club Cup the same year on October 9th. Parts of the album were performed and recorded by Condon in his bedroom again, but others were recorded with the live band, which resulted in a more organic, live sound. While writing, Condon said he was inspired by French music, like Jacques Brel (whose song Le Moribond he covered on his Elephant Gun EP), and he moved to Paris for a while. During the extensive tour in support of The Flying Club Cup, Condon and the band more or less fell apart from exhaustion once again and disappeared from the radar in April 2008.

Condon took a long break and returned in 2009 with a double EP, March of the Zapotec & Realpeople: Holland. The first was partly recorded in Mexico with the Mexican Band Jimenez and had a more South-American flavour to it than Condon’s previous efforts. The second EP ‘Holland’ was credited to Condon’s old name Realpeople and consisted of five electrotracks, once more in the vein of The Magnetic Fields.

Matt Elliott @ Mylos | 29.03.16

With song titles like ‘An Even Harder Shade Of Dark’, ‘I’m Sick And Tired Of Being Sick And Tired’, ‘I’ve Seen The Light And It Is Dark’ and ‘What To Do But Cry?’, Bristol, Avon, England-based, music concrete experimentalists the Third Eye Foundation attempt to articulate an unspecified dread. ‘It’s difficult to sum up in words,’ Matt Elliott (b. 10 March 1974, Bath, Avon, England) has said about the meaning of his awesome recordings, ‘That’s why I make the music I do.’ Despite Elliott’s claim to be happiest on his own, the Third Eye Foundation’s early releases notably included noise/sample contributions from Foehn’s Debbie Parsons. Dark, confused and sleeved with an image of a dead fox, Semtex was one of the 90s most astonishing debuts. On tracks like ‘Sleep’, queasy, guitar-generated white noise was cut-through with edgy, incendiary drum ‘n’ bass breakbeats. More than one critique of the album suggested that the project’s experiments with noise/breakbeats had pre-empted My Bloody Valentine ‘s probable new direction. The follow-up proper, Ghost – after a collection of Elliott’s remixes of Amp, Crescent, Hood and Flying Saucer Attack – nullified the last vestiges of rock in the Third Eye Foundation’s recordings. For Elliott, the sampler is the ultimate instrument and he applied the machine’s processes to archaic European and African folk recordings, merging the mutated noise with unidentified scrapes, clicks and shrieks. Although still cut through with a faintly disturbing edginess, Little Lost Soul appeared to shun the (largely undefined) terrors that had informed previous recordings. Elliott may simply be becoming more technically proficient in the construction of his neo-drum ‘n’ bass beats and less perverse in the choice of his samples (seemingly including opera and French torch singers) but the seven-track album was less harrowing than previous works. Thankfully, this implied increase in mental stability did not correlate with a creative demise: the 11-minute centrepiece ‘Lost’ was one of Elliott’s most evocative pieces.

Freskon, the International Fresh Fruits & Vegetables fair is taking place for the second consecutive time in April 21-23 of 2016 at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition & Conference Center. Goal of the organizer company, TIF HELEXPO is to designate Freskon as the sole commercial event concerning the fresh fruits and vegetables sector in the overall area of SE Europe and E. Mediterranean.

An additional goal of this year’s organization is to develop the business initiative, the extroversion of Greek production as well as to raise the primary sector. Consequently, in order for the international character of the fair to be enhanced, TIF HELEXPO follows a dynamic program of hosted buyers from 40 countries together with targeted promotion actions in Greece and abroad.

It worth mentioning that plenty of parallel events are scheduled to take place, forming once again, the main factor that will give prominence to the exhibition product, aiming at attracting more visitors. Special attention is paid to the invited foreign trade visitors from various countries of the world who will have some truly important contacts with the Greek exhibitors.

Parallel events play an equally important role; for instance, last year the special section FreshCon Market as well as the International Cherry Conference attracted hundreds of attendants whose interest remained in high levels throughout the events.

However, the attendance was also great during the speeches of people of the sector which were focused on this dynamic part of Greek economy.

In spite of the fact that Freskon counts only one organization, it forms the strategic connection between Greek fresh fruits and vegetables production and the international markets, important foreign retailers and transnational distribution networks.

It is a national meeting point for the musical youth of the country, and celebrated for its good value and quality programming, but is less familiar with audiences in the UK and beyond – Since it is listed among the best festivals in the world every September by the influential online independent music magazine Resident Advisor for the past 8 years in a row. It has also been voted as the 3rd best event in the Balkans on SEEME awards.

Based around the close connection and ties between music, art and e-culture, Reworks presents new musical and artistic paths and directions in one of the most historic parts of the Byzantine city of Thessaloniki. We define our Future

With over 800 artists experiencing the festival to date, Reworks resists and tries to stand still on a difficult cultural environment. Today having the economic crisis being a social crisis the need to step up is more necessary than ever before. Hence the festival encourages its audience to “Define their Future” by resisting on the current difficulties and to follow their dreams and ambitions trough musical and artistic creativity.
