Edu Imbernon

Edu Imbernon may be a good example of how a young artist can make himself a name in the scene through his music and djing skills. After the worldwide hit “El baile alemán” (Liebe Detail, 2009) produced with his friend Coyu, appointed “Best Underground Track of the Year” by Beatport , several tracks for labels as important as Get Physical, Young Turks, Skint, Stil vor Talent, Cr2, Noir, Great Stuff, Dynamic and his own label Eklektisch. His quality as producer and his ability to add a nu-disco tint to the dancefloor edge of his tracks have led him to remix bands such as The XX or X-press2 showcasing this homogenous blend of electronica, house and indie. His aim is to make music that can be felt, full of energy to reach the audience. “This is the only way that people will remember…

IAPSS World Congress 2014

IAPSS World Congress 2014 | 31.03 – 03.04.14

The concept of sovereign nation-states, relatively independent from each other seems long gone today. Globalisation brought many challenges to governance: the emergence of regional blocs and organisations who have nowadays prerogatives and responsibilities that previously were enjoyed exclusively by states; the rise of transnational problems calling for global answers, such as environmental issues but also international crime and financial movements; finally, technology and social networks, which have since been contributing to a great extent to further bringing down the walls between countries. Due to their very nature, these issues require global answers.

What is Global Governance and what does it consist of? Which challenges does the concept face? What are the contrasting ideas on the subject? In what possible means can Global Governance effectively tackle global problems? Must all these subjects go hand-in-hand? These are the questions we will try to address during our promising and inspiring debates and discussions at the 1st World Congress of the International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) in Thessaloniki, Greece from March 31st to April 3rd 2014.

Moreover, the members of IAPSS will have the chance to discuss all the actions of the association at the General Assembly following the Academic Conference and completing the 1st World Congress of the International Association for Political Science Students. The elections for the new Executive Committee and the Supervisory Committee will fulfill the agenda of the 18th General Assembly of the International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) taking place in Thessaloniki, Greece on April 4th and April 5th.

Art in Europe since 1945: Beyond boundaries

Written by Admin on . Posted in

ART IN EUROPE SINCE 1945: BEYOND BOUNDARIES
Curated by: Denys Zacharopoulos, art historian-artistic director MMCA in collaboration with Alexios
Papazacharias and Maro Psyrra.
Exhibition duration: February 8 – May 4 2014

Ιn the frame of the 30th Exhibition of the Council of Europe:
The Desire for Freedom. Art in Europe since 1945
An exhibition of the Deutsches Historisches Museum of Berlin.
Project Leader: Monika Flacke

The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art is participating in “The Desire for Freedom. Art in Europe since 1945”, the 30th exhibition of the Council of Europe, with the parallel emblematic exhibition “Art in Europe since 1945: Beyond boundaries”, which includes more than 200 works of art from renowned Greek and foreign artists. The exhibition is under the auspices of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union and will run from February 8th until May 4th 2014.

The Desire for Freedom:
“Desire for Freedom” is a first attempt to view art after 1945 in a pan-European context, without the usual ideological boundaries that the Cold War imposed.
The project is an idea of Monika Flacke and presented at the Deutsches Historisches Museum from 17 th October 2012 to 14th of February 2013 as well as at Palazzo Reale, Milan and in an additional version in Collegium Hungaricum in Berlin and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow. Additionnal venues are scheduled 2015 in the Dox Centre for Contemporary Art and the Art Gallery of Bosnie and Herzegovina in Sarajevo.
The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art was chosen to present a parallel exhibition representing Greece and its artistic position within the pan-European context.

The exhibition “Art in Europe since 1945: Beyond boundaries” at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.
The exhibition in the MMCA presents the European artistic reality through the presence of Greek artists who were dispersed throughout Europe and the relationships they developed with artists from other European countries or social groups who had also been expatriated, exiled, immigrants or were simply travellers along the European cultural horizon. Through emblematic works and unpublished documents are brought forth the complex European relationships that a series of people have developed from 1945 until today. People who in order to support the ideals of freedom, democracy and human rights, moved from one place to another both geographically and mentally, ideologically and artistically.

The 20th century was the brightest yet also the darkest century of history. After the 2nd World War, the artists and artistic movements throughout Europe were forced to confront a world in ruins and a frayed dynamic of social dialogue. They were called to participate in an era that vehemently interrogated the role and identity of the work and the artist.

Greece before the war had dramatically experienced the contradiction between modernism and tradition through the domination of a nationalistic and introverted interpretation of modernism. After the war, the artists, in an attempt to link their vision with that of the contemporary European reality, one which was desperately seeking a liberation from the traumas of fascism and every kind of introversion in all spectrums of public life, were forced to a great extent to expatriate and thusly participated in the international developments.

4th Thessaloniki Pride | 20-21.06.15

Proud Thessaloniki: A city of many colors
On 19 and 20 June 2015 rainbow hues shine over Thessaloniki inviting visitors to feel the vibe

Click here to see the full programme…

Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city, with a past of cosmopolitan regional metropolis is becoming a trending destination for tourists. The strong regional character of Northern Greece makes the city an important commercial and cultural hub, a kind of regional capital. This local distinctiveness, combined with the long history and the regional influence, is something that Thessaloniki’s citizens take pride in. So does its LGBT community, especially every June since 2012, when the first ever Thessaloniki LGBT pride festival took place.

Back then Thessaloniki was considered, in Greek collective consciousness, as a traditional and quite introvert city. Its recent history, dominated by conservative local leaders, did not leave much space for optimism. Yet, from the very first Thessaloniki Pride participation the LGBT community was filled with self-confidence that silenced their oppressors. Since then, Thessaloniki has been a welcoming environment for the budding LGBT community.

In the meantime Thessaloniki Pride, as an all-fresh and established event of the city, has grown immensely. The program touches upon current and trending issues, and includes a variety of activities that successfully joins thousands of people in what is the city’s biggest human rights festival resulting in a fiesta both locales and visitors can enjoy. The specific character of Thessaloniki guarantees the perfect mixture of cheerful festivity and protest of local mentality while simultaneously allowing the safe immersion of the Balkans and the Mediterranean.

The program of the 4th Thessaloniki Pride is designed to combine various facets of the city to remain true to the mission statement of the festival. On Friday, June 19, figures from the political and the civil society engage in public debate at the Pride Forum, as it all leads up to a street party in the epicenter of the city’s nightlife. On the next day, Saturday, June 20, the festival moves to the most popular summertime promenade by the waterfront of the city.

There it meets with the social life, but also with the history of the city, as the White Tower, Thessaloniki’s most recognizable landmark, dating back to the Ottoman times, dominates the area. After the sun sets, this landmark of the city is illuminated in the colors of the rainbow, creating a rare and spectacular view. At the peak of the festival, the parade crosses through some of the most central areas of the city, including the Tsimiski high street and the waterfront promenade. After the parade returns, the festival continues with performances by various singers, representing different genres of music.

This year, Thessaloniki Pride is also framed by a major art event. The city’s Biennale of Contemporary Art has included Ident-alter-ity, as its LGBT segment. Artists from all over the world, whose work on gender and sexuality, will be showcased in a visual art exhibition at the renowned New City Hall. Ident-alter-ity will last from 17 June to 28 July 2015.

Thessaloniki and its pride festival make the perfect destination for weekend travelers, but also for visitors who want to spend more time exploring this prominent urban center. The city and its vicinity can satisfy all tastes. In the very commercial center of the city you can visit remarkable sights dating back to the pre-Christian ages, and covering the history of three different Empires, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and also the Ottoman Empire, and illustrating the multicultural background of the city through the times. Furthermore, Thessaloniki meets up the expectations of all those who want to experience the world-famous Greek nightlife, be it local or international style. If you’re looking for a relaxed vacation, you can just lay back and enjoy the coffee culture of the city, as well as its numerous and delicious options. A one hour drive from Thessaloniki brings you to the magnificent beaches of Chalkidiki, the summertime paradise of Northern Greece. Mount Olympus, the ‘home of Gods’, and other eco- and agro-touristic destinations are also within a range of 120km from Thessaloniki. So is the extraordinary monastic state of Mount Athos. The vivid gay scene of the city with several gay bars and clubs, as well as Thessaloniki Pride itself, completes the picture, adding the LGBT segment to its touristic industry.

Thessaloniki and the fourth edition of its fresh and promising pride event on 19-20 June invite you to join the most dynamic and ambitious pride festival of Southeastern Europe and experience the Balkan mentality and culture in a safe environment in Northern Greece. Come celebrate with us!
