Open House Thessaloniki 2013

In 2012 Thessaloniki joined the Open House family and started organizing an event that will celebrate the city’s architecture and design. Open House is a simple but powerful concept: showcasing outstanding architecture for all to experience, completely for free. Open House initiatives invite everyone to explore and understand the value of a well-designed built environment.

The Open House event started in London in 1992, gaining in the past 20 years a lot of appreciation and support. Today 21 cities are members of the Open House Worldwide family and host annually this event, including New York, Dublin, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Helsinki, Melbourne, Barcelona, Chicago, Rome, Lisbon etc.

The second Open House event in Thessaloniki is taking place on 19th and 20th of October. Selected architectural sites will be open to the public during this weekend. The event is organised by the non-governmental and non-profit organisation Open House Greece, founded in 2012.

Open House Thessaloniki aspires to expose the architectural treasures of this dynamic city, and make architecture accessible to all. Its aim is to contribute to the deeper understanding of urban design and public space, and enable all citizens and visitors to explore and understand the value of a well-designed built environment.

Tristan

Tristan @ Principal Club Theater | 05.10.13

With a career as long as psy-trance has history, Tristan has been a constant in the ever-changing outdoor festival scene for many years. Playing at some of the most important festivals across the globe, Tristan and his music has a massive following of dedicated fans who love his full-on journeys of deep gurgling psychedelia. Tristan’s innate sense of the dancefloor and full power psychedelic moments place him in a league of only the very highest calibre of producer. Having collaborated with pretty much every other ‘big’ name in trance at some point and releasing 2 classic albums for the famed Twisted Records, Tristan has moved into a new arena, and is now fully onboard with the NANO Records family, who are currently blazing a trail through psy-dom with their passionate approach to good times and good music!

Tristan’s third album ‘Chemisphere’ is his most monstrous to date, and can be summed up by 3 letters : B-I-G !!! A newly re-kitted studio and his studying of the guitar has added some new flavours to Tristan’s signature sound, ensuring that all his fans will be utterly satisfied by these new offerings, clearly his best work to date.

This is the sound of summer, no holds barred psychedelic perfection, made for the dancefloor like only the big man can.

BAR 25 – EIN TAGE AUSSERHALB DER ZEIT

Written by Admin on . Posted in

The Greek-German Civil Society Network invites you to the screening of the film-documentary BAR 25 – EIN TAGE AUSSERHALB DER ZEIT.

BAR 25 is the famous techno-club on the river Spree in Berlin. A group of 13 young people, autonomously create their own alternative space resulting in the creation of the multiplex Bar 25 in 2004. The area, that Bar 25 was created in, was separated from the road by a tall wooden fence, which contributed drastically to the creation of an alternative multiplex. Bar, music scene, restaurant, fireplace, pizzeria, guesthouse, circus and even private residences make up the image of the community Bar 25. Equipment from old parks, swings, cars, foam machinery and thousand tons of confetti gave Bar 25 the appearance of a playground for adults, in which at times, some of the biggest Dj’s were hosted!

The documentary BAR 25 – EIN TAGE AUSSERHALB DER ZEIT, premiered in German cinemas in May 2012, recounting the course from construction till the closure of Bar 25 in 2010.

Emancipator

Emancipator @ Block 33 | 31.10.13

Support Act: Plastic Flowers (GR)

A search for mind immersing, spine tingling tracks would land many stumbling upon Emancipator. Between the countless tour dates, festivals, and studio time, Emancipator (aka Doug Appling); the Portland, OR based electronic producer, has retained a steady rise of success over the past few years. Playing sold out venues, to the delight of his faithful fans, 2012 proved to be a year of expansion and growth for this talented young musician. Further backed by the support of two highly acclaimed albums, Soon it will be cold enough and Safe in the steep cliffs and the recent launch of his own label, Loci Records, this young entrepreneur shows no signs of slowing down.

Known for its etheric melodies, immaculately smooth samples, and addictive drum beats, Emancipator’s music has captivated a diverse audience across the globe. One might struggle to place a finger on what makes the music so addictive, but would undoubtedly return to the underlying feeling of balance and connection. Now accompanied regularly by the harmonious swells of live violin played by Ilya Goldberg, Emancipator’s live performances have developed into an all-encompassing musical experience.

With the release of his newest album, Dusk to Dawn, the music promises listeners a nostalgic return to the soulful integration of organic hip hop and symphonic layers that first captivated his audience. “Minor Cause”, the first single off Dusk to Dawn proved a buzz-worthy track with its’ video premier on MTV’s Hive – followed by an uproar of enthused listeners wanting more. Trusting his roots yet simultaneously evolving, Emancipator’s fresh new cultivation is nothing short of a renaissance.

CATS @ Thessaloniki Concert Hall | 12 – 23.02.13

Since Cats first opened on the West End stage in 1981, it has become one of the world’s best known and best loved musicals and has grossed over £1 billion. With a plot based on T.S Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and award-winning music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber; Cats, originally directed by Trevor Nunn, has since been presented in over 20 countries and in about 250 cities, including such diverse destinations as Buenos Aires, Seoul, Helsinki and Singapore.

The show has been translated into 10 languages: Japanese, German, (three versions for Germany, Austria and Switzerland), Hungarian, Norwegian, Finnish, Dutch, Swedish, French, Spanish (two versions for Mexico and Argentina) and Italian. The Swiss production required a bilingual cast who performed in German and English on alternate nights. The title of the show has rarely been translated, the Mexican producers did a survey as to whether the Mexican audience would like their production to be called Gatos – the response in favour of keeping the English original was unanimous.

The show has not only been presented in theatres, but also in tents in Japan and Korea, an engine shed in Switzerland, and school gymnasiums across the USA.

STOMP

Written by Admin on . Posted in

STOMP @ Thessaloniki Concert Hall | 02 – 06.10.13

STOMP has no words – everyone can understand it. It has little or no melody in the traditional sense, so it doesn’t matter if your taste in music is jazz, classical, dance or pop. STOMP is about rhythm, which is common to all cultures. Everyone knows rhythm, if only from the beating of their own heart – it is the basis of all music.

STOMP is a group of people, with very strong personalities, who work together using simple building blocks to create something complex , something everyone can identify with: everyone has, at some time, to engage in group activity, whether they like or know the people they are working with or not. It’s the little idiosyncrasies, the differences between people, and the games of one-upmanship that ensue, which define the group dynamic.

There are several STOMP companies currently performing around the world: up to three working from the UK and two in North America. Each company has its own style, its own feel: this is because even though the show is very tightly choreographed and orchestrated, there is a lot of room for every performer’s own personality to shine through. The show is as much an expression of eight individuals with very strong personalities as it is a vision of rhythm.

A Place To Bury Strangers

Written by Admin on . Posted in

A Place To Bury Strangers @ Mylos | 18.10.13

A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called “the loudest band in New York”. This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called “loud” rock and roll that’s out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they’ve accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that’s clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make. A Place To Bury Strangers does not so much play songs as allow them to pour out. They are songs about longing, heartbreak and confusion played extremely well and at a passionately loud volume.
