J.Kriste, Master of Disguise

J.Kriste, Master of Disguise @ Gaia Live | 18.05.13

J.Kriste, Master of Disguise went from being the bedroom music project (hence the weird name) of Cypriot Lefteris Moumtzis, to becoming a live 10-piece orchestra. For a time, in between, it was also a five-piece prog-rock band based in London under the name Masters of Disguise that executed J.Kriste and other original material. That band produced two EPs in the time of its existence (2005-2008). The bedroom days (2003-2005) produced the first J.Kriste album named “This is the alternative” (Moon Records), a highly experimental record with prog-rock, jazz, psychedelic and electronic elements. 2008 saw the start of the recordings for Girls, Ghosts and Gods, Moumtzis’ second solo album. In May of that year he gathered a collection of unused songs from the Masters of Disguise set and flew to Athens, Greece to begin the sessions. In May 2009 ‘Girls, Ghosts and Gods’ (Puzzlemusik) was released in Cyprus and later on in Greece where it was proclaimed as one of the best albums of that year. The songs on the album bear a strong “scent” of London, where they were written, but also distinctive references to Greek traditional music.

In November 2010 J.Kriste, Master of Disguise played a long-awaited concert for the first time as 10-piece band. These videos are taken from that show. The band as seen in the videos performed again at the Cultural Festival of the University of Cyprus at Axiothea on the 28th of June 2011 and at Kypria Festival on the 11th and 12th of October 2012.

A new record, “The Age of Now”, was released on the 21st of December 2012 on Louvana Records.

The Dream Syndicate

The Dream Syndicate @ Principal Club Theatre | 30.05.13

The Dream Syndicate, formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural bridge between the Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers. Their first album, Days Of Wine And Roses (1982), conveyed, more than anything else, the synthesis of Bob Dylan and the Velvet Underground that had been the hidden theme of the new wave. Echoes of the Rolling Stones, the Stooges and the Doors increased the hellish atmospheres of Wynn’s confessional trips. While Wynn was lost in his existential panic, Precoda and Smith lifted the music to a majestic level. When Smith left, the “acid” quotient dropped, and the band opted for the quieter jamming of Medicine Show (1984), a presage of the new sound of Out Of The Grey (1986), reminiscent of Neil Young’s neurotic country-rock; but Wynn was still the only songwriter capable of making his lyrics bleed.
Ghost Stories (1988) closed the semicircle by almost embracing R.E.M.’s folk-rock.

The combination of abrasive guitars, dramatic tension and crude realism coined a language that would inspire countless bands of the 1980s. (Scaruffi)

A live album, Live at Raji’s, was recorded before Ghost Stories but released afterward. Posthumous releases include 3 1/2; The Lost Tapes 1985-1988, a collection of unreleased studio sessions, and The Day Before Wine and Roses, a live radio performance recorded just prior to the release of the band’s first album. Steve Wynn has continued on as a solo artist. Mark Walton went on to play with the Continental Drifters.

Parov Stelar & Band @ FIX Open Air | 23.05.13

Austrian musician Parov Stelar has taken over the global music scene like a phantom in recent years. Through his music the modest but exceptional talent has not only gained an enormous fan base, but has also achieved cult status as a producer.

His retro- influenced music is borne out of an aura of elegance, wickedness and pure energy. inspired by styles and samples from themost varying of genres (soul, pop, jazz and swing) and combined with modern beats and grooves he creates an incomparable and peerless sound.

For his live shows Parov Stelar takes to the stage with a host of musical magicians. The performances of the Parov Stelar band are one of the most impressive live conversions of electronic music currently to be seen anywhere in the world. Brass and rhythm sections along with singer Cleo Panther reinvent Parov Stelar’s electro beats, emotionally charging the public in a way never thought possible.

At the centre of the show is the creator himself, guiding the musical tour de force from the DJ booth. Despite 100’s of live shows and excessive touring the band still continues to push their own creativity and break the boundaries of musical performance. Each show is uniquely different from the previous, inviting the listener to explore new aspects and emotions within Parov Stelar’s music.

Your Hand in Mine

Your Hand in Mine @ Block 33 | 24.05.13

“Your Hand In Mine” are two friends from Thessaloniki (Greece). Manos plays wurlitzer piano, melodica, toy piano, ukulele, accordion and does the programming, while George plays some guitar shaped toy synth, mandolin, zither, glockenspiel and hits random objects in his rythmic kit. The project emerged from members of the postrock band “Shortcat” in late 2006, giving them the opportunity to express their love to acoustic instruments, french folk songs and street musicians. With a constantly growing collection of custom-toy instruments and machines, “Your Hand In Mine” act as live-looping based duet, willing to present a new-romantic, deeply personal sense of chamber music.

Being strongly impatient, in January 2007, they released their first recordings in 100 totally handmade cd copies. The self titled EP, having references to modern west-european folk music and experimentation, defines the band’s aesthetics and identity.

In the summer of 2007, after being commissioned by the “independent days” section of Thessaloniki’s International Film Festival (T.I.F.F.), they composed original score for Mikio Naruse’s silent masterpiece “Every Night Dreams” (“yogoto no yume, 1933”). The soundtrack was presented as a live accompaniment of the film’s screening during the 48th T.I.F.F, while the following spring (May of 2008), it was distributed by “Inner Ear” label of Patras.

Your Hand in Mine keep enriching their sound palette with new timbres and, in spring of 2011, they come back with a new record. Nine sonic novels, nine small stories told in a fictionary garden, are transcribed into musical notes, composing their second album, which is entitled “The Garden Novels”. This album was released in September 2011, in both cd and vinyl format also by Inner Ear.
