Psychic Ills (Sacred Bones, US) + This Is Nowhere (Hands in Sand, GR) @ Mavri Tripa | 26.03.13

Psychic Ills | psychicills.com

When it comes to following the beat of their own drum, New York’s Psychic Ills have exemplified the phrase since their beginnings in 2003. Initially spawned from electronic-centered home recording experiments, they progressed into all-night full-band exploration in a neighborhood where noise wasn’t a problem. They soon after evolved into a live band seemingly at home within the extended jam, exploring a variety of musical terrain. The early years saw several releases for Social Registry, tons of time on the road, and collaborations with artists as diverse as Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers) and Sonic Boom (Spacemen Three/Spectrum). In 2011, their first effort for Sacred Bones, Hazed Dream traded in the synthesizer space-outs and raga rumbles, and delivered a record of sunburned psych pop, awash in warm tones and blues damaged songwriting.

In 2012 they did two full US tours including a stop at Austin Psych Fest, and had their first trip to China. In August of 2012 they released the song “Take Me With You” as a split 7-inch with Moon Duo. They recorded One Track Mind, their fourth full length, this fall. The album features collaborations with and some production by Neil Michael Hagerty of Royal Trux/The Howling Hex and features artwork by former 13th Floor Elevators songwriter and artist Powell St. John. There will also be a limited value-add covers 7” available on initial orders, containing the Ills’ takes on The Godz’ “Radar Eyes” and private press psych pop obscurity Cosmic Michaels’ “Cosmic Michael Theme”. One Track Mind is perhaps the most straight-forward rock record the Ills have ever made. They will be touring in support of it heavily in both Europe and the Us. The drum keeps beating and they keep following it…

Faced with a deluge of groove-based psych, many listeners failed to notice Psychic Ills peculiar idiosyncrasy, and they got subsumed. Now that all is quiet, or quieter, on the kaleidoscopic rock front, it’s easier to hear the radical economy that sets them apart. While most freaked-out churners give in to the temptation to throw everything into the cauldron and boil, Psychic Ills cherry-pick their ingredients and slow roast till golden… a mirror in a desert gently turning in the breeze — The Wire

Τhis is Νowhere | thisisnowhere.bandcamp.com

This is nowhere is a 4-piece, downtuned band from Salonica, Greece. Since 2009, they’re lost somewhere among psychedelia, punk blues, noise, the first Funkadelic album, experimental and desert rock (actually there is a small desert in Greece), delay, bass and more bass… One of the key musical projects behind “Hands In Sand cooperative” along with “De Sades”, “Alien Mustangs” and “Million Hollers”, they have released for the label a 7inch, 2 track album limited to 300 copies (Sold Out) and a brand new split 10inch e.p with “De Sades”.

PAN-POT

NON – CHICNESS – MINCEMUSIC presents:
PAN-POT (Mobilee) | DARKTOM (Non Collective) | GEORGE ADI (Non Collective)
VISUALS: MINIMALICQUANTUM

PAN-POT | pan-pot.net

A pan-pot is a simple, workday knob, given to side-to-side flip-flopping and not much else. Pan-Pot, on the other hand, are a brilliant multi-dimensional Berlin duo currently twisting house and techno fans into rapturous fits. In just a few short years, Pan-Pot—comprised of Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix—have developed a dominate presence amongst the top tier of electronic dance music, with an ascension paralleling the rise of their native label, mobilee records.

After booking Anja Schneider for an infamously ill-fated party in 2005, the duo established a connection with Schneider’s then recently formed imprint and within weeks had released the Popy and Caste EP on mobilee—their first release and the label’s second. Graduates of Berlin’s SAE, their initial musical efforts placed a primacy on integrating electronic experimentation with minimal stylings while simultaneously establishing the ominous, murky sounds that have since become synonymous with their name. The next few years saw the release of a steady stream of original tracks and remixes on both mobilee and Einmaleins, each demonstrating the duo’s commitment to precise, undulating and kinetic grooves accompanied by a steady expansion of their sonic palate.

The defining moment of their career, however, was the release of their debut artist album, Pan-O-Rama. The first artist album to be released on mobilee, the aptly named Pan-O-Rama provided a stunning 360-degree tour of techno at its most twisted, balancing somber atmospherics with an impeccable lightness of touch. Serving as a playground for their experimental leanings, the album was a definitive statement of Pan-Pot’s past, present, and future: an affirmation of the possibility of a wider sonic spectrum that suggested a move towards stripped-down techno while simultaneously hinting towards a newly developed sense of melody.

When not in the studio writing original material or putting their unique spin on tracks by a myriad of artists, the bad-boys of impassioned, pitch-black techno can be found on the road touring at a near ceaseless level. Their dance floor oriented DJ sets see them playing back to back and are unconstrained by boundaries as they effortlessly transition between techno, house and everything in between, demonstrating an immaculate understanding of the audience’s wants and needs.

Their willingness to expand the components of their productions while staying firmly rooted in what they do best—colossal, haunting techno tracks overflowing with noise and static, throbbing bass lines, and epic builds that manage to be both tasteful and restrained—is only part of what differentiates Pan-Pot from the hordes of other techno producers currently flooding the airwaves. They may name themselves after a piece of gear, but Pan-Pot’s music is ultimately about moving bodies, not knobs, all the while giving way to an unprecedented degree of dynamism on dance floors around the world.

Chinese Man @ Principal Club Theater | 12.04.13
Οpening act: Burning City feat.J Fyah

Based in France, The Chinese Man remains a mistery… Who are they? Where are they? And more particularly what are they? If you really wonder, these few lines won’t be that useful…

One‐quarter Cantonese, two‐thirds Manchou, the Chinese man appears to be from the Wu Tang Mountain, not far from Marseille. In 2004, the Chinese man (as we affectionately call him) decided to send his disciples around the world to spread the Zen spirit with old music samples and supersonic bass!

Dj Shantel | Gaia 3 Years Party | 07.03.13

The SHANTEL hymn DISKO PARTIZANI has shown the world that it really does exist: music without frontiers. All over Europe, boys and girls are screaming DISKO, DISKO PARTIZANI! And their grandmothers are belly-dancing, their grandfathers are jumping around, their parents are elated. The style-police are left scratching their heads. “OMG, what’s all this Balkan Pop stuff? We just don’t get it…”

But Shantel does. He knows how to turn a club, a concert hall or the dusty earth of an open-air festival into a temporary autonomous zone – a place where integration isn’t something to be debated at length, but where it actually becomes reality. Established academics and immigrant kids share the same space. Planet Paprika is a place in constant flux, always on the move – and the best thing about it is that you can follow in its wake!

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion

Written by Admin on . Posted in

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion @ Gaia Live | 20.04.13
Support act: The Speakeasies Swing Band

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion | hillbillymoon.com

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion are to release a new album ‘Damn Right Honey’.  It follows up their 2011 ‘Buy Beg Or Steal’ album that spawned the viral and vinyl phenomenon ‘My Love For Evermore’, a duet with Sparky Phillips from Demented Are Go. With over two million Youtube views, selling out six 7” single pressings, and a dozen cover versions, the murder ballad became a worldwide obsession.

Based around ex-patriot Englishmen Oliver Baroni and Duncan James together with chanteuse Emanuela Hutter, they’ve long been showing Zurich how to rock’n’roll. Now having conquered both their domestic residence and neighbouring France where they’re in high demand, they return to the UK as part of a European tour for a series of club dates in early May and for festivals in August. As their name suggests The Hillbilly Moon Explosion’s roots are in rockabilly; however they’ve always been just as comfortable with 60’s pop and smoky ballads. They’ve now have widened their template to embrace all roots Americana.

‘Damn Right Honey’ features two distinctive guest singers joining them for duets. Rockabillynstalwart Paul Ansell, the chosen vocalist of Scotty Moore, contributes to the single ‘Flying High, Moaning Low’. And Sparky Phillips returns to duet with Emanuela on ‘Northern Crown’. For the first time they’ve engaged a brass section, and are also aided and abetted by BJ Cole and Geraint Watkins amongst others. The album is again produced by Greg Townson of US bands The Hi-Risers and Los Straightjackets, and was recorded at Goldtop Studio in Tooting, South London.

First formed some years ago, their first three albums were issued on different rockabilly labels. Relaunched with their fourth, ‘Buy Beg Or Steal’, they embarked on a busy schedule touring clubs and festivals across Europe, including touring with Jeff Beck. In the UK last year they appeared at disparate events such as for the Swiss Olympic team, the Rebellion Punk Festival and the Jazz Café.

The Speakeasies Swing Band | speakeasies.gr

Originated in Thessaloniki, Greece in early 2010, although the idea of a Swing band was spinning on the minds of the founding band members for a long time. The Speakeasies Swing Band made their first appearance in SwingALONICA, a swing festival held by “Lindy Hop Greece”, in May 2010 at Block33. This lead to a successful collaboration both with the concert hall and the dancing team. Since then, the band played several times at Block33 and on all of Lindy Hop Greece’s events or festivals (Swing n’ Swim Dance Camp I & II, Swingalonica x-mas 2010). They have participated in various festivals and they have toured in many cities around Greece and Europe. Among others, they have played with “Cherry Poppin’ Daddies” and “Rhythm Junkies”.

In March 2011 they wrote their first own song “Bright Lights Late Nights” in order to create a music video. At the end of the same year they repeat the same experiment resulting in a new video, “Black Swamp Village”  in which among others the internationally known dancers Kevin St. Laurent & Jo Hoffberg were involved. Thus, in July 2012 they publish their first album “Bathtub Gin”, while with their track “Bright Lights Late Nights” becomes part of the German collection “Swing Style Vol.3″.

Ondatrópica

Written by Admin on . Posted in

Ondatrópica @ Principal Club Theater | 23.05.13

Colombian musician, Mario Galeano, the force behind the band Frente Cumbiero, and English producer Will Holland (A.K.A. Quantic), have joined forces to create the Ondatrópica project.

This project, which is supported by the British Council, exists to explore and expand the tropical sound of Colombia in its rawest form and to marry it with the cool sound of London. The immediate result is not just a new recording – to be released within the next few months – but a hot band which will have the honour of representing Colombia at the cultural *Olympiads* in *London*. Ondatrópica came about as a result of the success of Frente Cumbiero Meets Mad Professor album collaboration, which led to the British Council commissioning Mario Galeano to generate a new collaboration, this time with Will Holland (AKA: Quantic).

The project unfolded in three phases. Phase one, focused on the creation and recording of the record, brought together a group of top musicians representing both classic and more modern styles of Colombian music. In this project, which is unique in national music history, artists such as Fruko, Anibal Velásquez, Michi Sarmiento, Alfredito Linares, Pedro Ramayá Beltran, Markitos Mikolta, and Wilson Viveros joined a group of younger Colombian musicians and the UK’s Quantic to (re)generate the excitement that positioned Colombian music as one of the most influential of the continent in past decades. The aim of exploring a musical path with these pioneers and visionaries from the 60s, 70s and 80s, is not about nostalgia, but is a reaffirmation of the validity and contemporariness of the concept. With this in mind, classic standards of production take centre stage, with equipment and techniques typical of analogue sound – for example, vintage microphones and taking advantage of the expertise of key musical figures such as legendary engineer and producer Mario Rincón, responsible for some of the best recordings of the 1970s. The legendary Discos Fuentes studio, in Medellin, with a history spanning over 75 years, and with a pedigree which includes Los Corraleros de Majagual, Joe Arroyo, Andrés Landero and Afrosound, was the studio of choice!

The second phase of the project focused on creating Los Irreales de Ondatrópica, a group of 10 musicians who will, again, represent the old and the new. From a base in Bogotá, the band are adapting the initial Discos Fuentes repertoire, preparing to take the world stage by storm in July 2012.

The last and final phase of Ondatrópica, their presentation in London, showed the world that the most compelling and relevant Colombian music is here to be rediscover.

Makris Bro & Co | RetroFuturism @ Kalos&Klio Showroom | 15.02 – 15.03.13

In their individual exhibition at Kalos & Klio showroom entitled “RetroFuturism”, the designers Makris Bro & Co exhibit a new series of sculptural lights designed by experimenting with organic forms of aluminum, brass, wood and steel in a dialogue with light and shadow. The lights in the exhibition play with the boundaries between design and art, industrial and handmade, and compose the retro with the modern.

Makris brothers are a special-case designers given the lack of infrastructure and industrial production in Greece, and they insist to create and produce useful objects of industrial design. The furniture and fixtures that they desigh and construct, are implemented with sculptural values with references to style and organic forms of Art Nouveau, while in the dialogue between the mechanical functional forms and the fantastic futuristic details comprise a retro futuristic steampunk aesthetic, that characterizes creative objects of Makris Bro & Co. Always maintaining their obsession with the materiality they use hot materials such as wood, and cold like glass, aluminum and bronze. The creations of Makris brothers with the balance between form and function are related to the logic of sculpture since it is a limited production design that leverages not only the potential of using high quality materials but also the experimental design, that is allowed by the small production creating objects that embody the values of handmade.

Since 2000 the Makris brothers joined forces activating in the industrial design. John Makris is a designer, painter and sculptor. Christos Makris is an electronic and c.n.c. programmer. Aside from their individual projects, Makris Bro & Co collaborate with architects and professional designers and manufacture furniture, lamps and other household objects. Their work has been exhibited in Thessaloniki in the XV Biennale of Mediterranean Youth, 2011. Makris Bro & Co have many paricipations in industrial design exhibitions in Greece and abroad, while since 2010 they maintain a cooperation with m.a.d. gallery in Switzerland.
