Thessaloniki 1912-2012. Architecture of a century

Written by Admin on . Posted in

The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art presents the exhibition “THESSALONIKI 1912-2012. ARCHITECTURE OF A CENTURY” from 15 February to 14 April 2013. The exhibition is co-organized by the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, the Modern Architectural Archives of the Benaki Museum and the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and was originally presented at the Benaki Museum (18/10/2012-25/11/2012) with great success and now “returns” to the city of Thessaloniki and the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art. The museological and museographical diligence is directed by the architect and architectural historian, Proffesor Vassilis Kolonas in collaboration with MSc architect Alexiadou Sotiria.

In 2012, 100 years since the liberation of the city, the change of the city’s image is ambiguous, multidimensional and highly impressive. Events such as the World War I, the great fire of 1917, the study and implementation of the new plan, reconstruction, post-war reconstruction, the great works of the decade 1955-1965, the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering and general building regulations, constitute a milestone in the evolution of urban space and the starting point for a thorough analysis and presentation of the architecture.

The evolution of eclecticism, dominant architectural power in Thessaloniki during the period of Turkish rule, in a variety of types and forms closely associated with the modern Greek reality, but also the international architecture trend (modern movement, Art DeCo), marks the change of the city’s image, always open to new ideas, which fits dynamically in the Greek state.

“THESSALONIKI 1912-2012. ARCHITECTURE OF A CENTURY” aims to present the iconography of the city, through the typological and morphological characteristics of the buildings. The basic criterion for selecting the projects presented in the exhibition of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art is their representative capacity for a certain type of building or architectural style, the identity of the owner-operator and the importance of the mandate in the production of the architectural work. The buildings presented, are demonstrating the potential that Thessaloniki had to evolve in a city different from today, if these buildings were the majority and not the minority in the final selections of owners and organisations.

The exhibition mainly presents implemented projects, while the main research goal was to identify the original material, drawings and photographs from the time of completion of the buildings in order the effect of the architectural intent and the registration of the building in the urban landscape to be seen. The research in the archives of Thessaloniki Urban Organisation, in the Archives of Modern Architecture of the Benaki Museum, in photographic and personal files of various architects, and the indexing of the daily and periodical press revealed unknown details and suggested  infamous architects with remarkable architectural projects.

The absence of modern memory is huge. Shortcomings and omissions in such an effort is inevitable. Especially in recent decades, where the buildings have not yet been recorded in the collective memory as facts of urban space, the choice is difficult and premature. In each period the dominant trend is evident in the architecture of the city. The transition from one period to another, reveals a different city in coexistence or confrontation with the past. The years homogenize the differences and through the volumes of concrete, someone can still discern that is not impersonal, and this is what should highlight.

Thessaloniki, despite the morphological and spatial variations, never ceased to be what everyone wants to think and believe about its own city, with buildings, traffic problems, the lack of green, but also with this irresistible charm that its buildings still have, symbols of the image that the exhibition attempts to present.

Basement Freaks @ Trap basement | 27.04.13

If you’ve been paying any attention to the world of funky breakbeats then you’ve no doubt heard of Basement Freaks – the brainchild of George Fotiadis, a major force in the scene for well over ten years. Not only do his DJ sets elevate sold out crowds, he produces more music than almost any other DJ in the scene and is the label boss for the infamous label Bombastic Jam.

After more than 10 successful vinyl releases, 2 full albums, over 15 remixes and countless digital EPs, George has been called “The hardest working man in Funk”. His music has been praised by MixMag, I-DJ Mag and even the Godfather of Nu-Skool Breaks – Rennie Pilgrem. In fact, every respectable funk DJ on the planet includes a Basement Freaks tune in their set.

George exploded into the world of breaks with his remix of Beggarman by Smoove and Turrell. Jalapeno records got wind of this and sought out George to produce a follow-up album – “Something Freaky” – which has been played on BBC’s Radio1 and written about in Knowledge Magazine. His previous album – “Debut” – was part of his side project, Smokey Bandits, and showcases George’s multitalented skills as he plays guitar, bass and drums. Since then, George has released music for Goodgroove,Wack,Breakbeat Paradise, ESL, Air Recordings, Bombstrikes and, of course, Bombastic Jam.

Basement Freaks has toured extensively throughout Europe – dropping funk at the renowned Glastonbury Festival, the Fabric Nightclub in London and the Exit & Reworks Festivals. In the summer of 2011, Basement Freaks headlined the world’s largest and best breakbeat festival – Shambhala – in Canada. Ten thousand screaming fans went ballistic as they experienced a night of incredible funk from one of the world’s best – The Basement Freaks.

John Digweed @ Shark | 03.03.13

A unique house party with John Digweed!

John Digweed, dj and progressive house producer comes to SHARK’s decks for the very first time for a full progressive house dj set with SHARK mood!

Warm up by Wrong Display and outro by Kostis Zartaloudis.

Reservations: +30 2310 416855

Some DJ careers are built on hype. John Digweed’s career is built on substance. One of the planet’s most popular DJs, his sets never fall out of favour with clubbers the world over, as his relentless global gig schedule testifies. From ethereal, swirling cinematic soundscapes to energy-infused bass-bothering tech growlers, a new generation of clubbers are learning what we already know – that there’s nothing quite like being locked into a John Digweed set.

But John Digweed is much more than a DJ. Bedrock – his record label, promotions company and production partnership with Nick Muir – is a mothership of creative ingenuity and integrity that other labels orbit around. His vision for the Bedrock record label has been realized over 12 years, as he continuously seeks out mixes and remixes from the world’s best producers. Techno mainstays like Marco Bailey, Christian Smith and John Selway sit comfortably alongside hot new talent like Guy J in the Bedrock camp.

In a dance scene increasingly inhabited by inflated egos and gimmicks, John’s approach remains all drive, no drama, a heads-down crack-on attitude that has won him the respect of his peers. However, the fact remains that John Digweed has notched up a mighty list of groundbreaking achievements since he first became involved in the embryonic acid house scene as a 15-year-old lad in Hastings. From Top 40 smashes ‘Heaven Scent’ and ‘For What You Dream Of’ (with Nick Muir) to world renowned mix CDs for Renaissance, GU and Northern Exposure, it’s little surprise he was voted No.1 DJ in the World by DJmag readers in 2001.

Ten years on, the excitement John Digweed generates is even more palpable today. With Nick he has scored a Hollywood film (Stark Raving Mad) and Spiderman`s animated series for Sony/MTV. toured with David Bowie and Moby, and transformed Brighton Beach into the UK’s biggest beach party (250,000 people) with Fatboy Slim. His Transitions, Bedrock and Structures albums continue to turn new fans on worldwide, Bedrock’s recent 12th birthday party at London’s O2 Brixton Academy was a road-blocked sell-out and his Transitions radio show is one of the world’s most successful dance music shows, broadcast across 45 countries to a staggering weekly audience of over 14 million.

But the real beauty in John Digweed’s story lies in his unflinching belief in the music he plays. And with new music comes new chapters in an already astonishing career.

Aegean – Creation of an Archipelago

Written by Admin on . Posted in

Aegean – Creation of an Archipelago @ NOESIS | 19.02.13 – 30.06.14

The exhibition “AEGEAN – Creation of an Archipelago”, which is hosted at The Science Center and Technology Museum “NOESIS”, in Thessaloniki Greece, will be in view until June 2014. The extension was granted due to the high interest expressed from schools and groups of visitors from all over the world. This important exhibition takes place in an area of 850 m2 and presents the geological treasures of the Aegean sea through a wealth of exhibits, an extensive photo collection and wide use of multimedia.

It is a large exhibition with rare exhibits and fossils from sequoias, palmtrees and deinotheriums, which lived in the area of the Aegean sea 20 million years ago and were preserved in layers of volcanic ash. There are also representations of volcanoes and tectonic plates that highlight the unparalleled beauty of the islands and describe the geological evolution of the area.

The exhibition provides answers to questions related to the formation of the Aegean, to what existed prior to its creation, the natural forces which formed the recent relief of the Archipelago and the forms of human life, flora and fauna which appeared during a million-year period.

The highlight of the exhibition is a 12-metre petrified tree-trunk of a broadleaved fruit tree which was discovered in Eressos, Lesvos and goes 18,5 million years back. There are plenty of other rare exhibits from the geological “wonders” of the Aegean presented to the public for the first time.

Among those are unique ammonites from Chios island, which existed in the waters of Tethys ocean 245 million years ago, rock remains of palm, pine and oak trees, a boulder with leaf imprints of cinnamon and baytree and testimonies of human evolution like the skull of Ouranopithecus Macedoniensis and the Petralona skull. Equally important are the fossilised antelope skull from Samos island, the skull of the short-neck giraffe from Chios and the jaw of the dwarf elephant from Telos.

The exhibition consists of 3 thematic sections. The main section presents the entire geological history of the Aegean basin, the second all the geodynamic processes, the volcanity and the seismicity, while the third demonstrates the impressive evolution of biodiversity and its ecosystems for a period of 20 million years.

The exhibition is organised by The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest along with the Geology-Paleontology Museum of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the collaboration of the Universities of the Aegean and Crete, while TETRAGON is responsible for the design and production.

“AEGEAN – Creation of an Archipelago” combines scientific expertise, stunning aesthetics and an educational approach in order to be both informative and entertaining. Specialised staff offers guided tours for schools and groups of visitors, while for children above 5 there are organised educational programms like the “Weekends in Aegean” which take place every weekend.

The exhibition will last until the end of June 2014.

AUditors Domination @ Mylos | 28.02.13

AUditors DOmination (Au.Do) were founded in 2008. Au.Do, based in Thessaloniki, is the Trio formed by Antony, Michael and Stelios. They recently finished their debut album “Palace of light”. This album is a mix of electronic and ethnic sounds, colored with dub melodies! It has a worldwide style and groove that gives you a sense of freedom.

Au.Do’s music is not targeting a specific audience. It can be characterized as a mix of trip-hop, dub, latin, down-tempo and world-beat genres. Their sound is both incentive and emotional. The central idea is that everything can be combined in the music world. Music is limitless. Au.Do are exploring the past music industry to discover new sounds, vibes, and techniques. That’s why they began experimenting with various traditional instruments based on modern rhythms. You will notice that in “Palace of light”. The tracks contained in the album have significant different styles. This is the main principle that Au.Do are following and will continue to follow in their future releases; the goal is to offer a pleasant and unique music experience to the audience.

Au.Do have already cooperated with several session musicians to fulfill their musical needs. Their work is produced in their private studio, L.F.Show, which is based in Thessaloniki since 2007. L.F.Show, created by Au.Do themselves, is a modern studio that offers all the reliable equipment required for producing and mastering modern electronic music.

After their successful appearance in several electronic music festivals and live stages, Au.Do are getting prepared for their shows. At the same time they are working on some new remixes. Au.Do’s. remixes are the result of their cooperation with other electronic artists. Remixes already released by Au.Do:Thomas Blonded – Havana 2am, Palyrria – Se quema, Second Sky – Art of influence,Basement Freaks – Booty Funk,Empresarios – Estereolismo and more to be released…

Economic collapse or not, these Greek musicians refuse to let the art die and push on to give us their debut album, Palace Of Light. Hailing from historical city of Thessaloniki, this trio pumps out worldly music consisting mixtures of trip-hop, reggae, latin and world-beat instrumentation (hillydilly.com)

Swans

Written by Admin on . Posted in

Swans @ Mylos | 16.05.13

Swans is an American post-punk band originally active from 1982 to 1997, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. The band was one of the few groups to emerge from the early 1980s New York No Wave scene and stay intact into the next decade. Formed by Gira in 1982, Swans employed a shifting lineup of musicians until their dissolution in 1997. Besides Gira, the only other constant members were keyboardist/vocalist/songwriter Jarboe from 1984 to 1997, and semi-constant guitarist Norman Westberg. The band was noted for droning vocals and strange instrumentation. In 2010, Gira reactivated Swans without Jarboe. The reformed band has released two new studio albums: My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky in 2010, followed by The Seer in 2012.

The Seer took 30 years to make. It’s the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I’ve ever made, been involved in or imagined. But it’s unfinished, like the songs themselves. It’s one frame in a reel. The frames blur, blend and will eventually fade.

The songs began on an acoustic guitar, then were fleshed out with (invaluable) help from my friends, then were further tortured and seduced in rehearsals, live and in the studio, and now they await further cannibalism and force-feeding as we prepare to perform some of them live, at which point they’ll mutate further, endlessly, or perhaps be discarded for a while.

Despite what you might have heard or presumed, my quest is to spread light and joy through the world. My friends in Swans are all stellar men. Without them I’m a kitten, an infant. Our goal is the same: ecstasy!
