Hugo Race Fatalists @ Block 33 | 29.03.13

Hugo Race is a prolific and visionary performer, musician, writer and producer. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Hugo’s creative journey has given him ‘world citizen’ status, having lived over the course of the last 25 years in Italy, France, Germany, the UK and the USA. Hugo’s songwriting draws on pop culture from rock n roll to soul to delta blues to avantguard electronic soundscapes.

A founding member of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds (he appears on the debut, “From Her to Eternity”, and features on several other Bad Seed’s cds and various compilations), Hugo then founded the seminal Australian art-punk cult band The Wreckery (1985), released through the White, Rampant, Citadel and Normal labels. (A Wreckery retrospective,”Past Imperfect”, was released in 2008 through Memorandum/Fuse Records, Sydney; in September 2010, The Wreckery in its original line-up will tour Australia supporting Peter Hook’s ‘Joy Division’).

Hugo Race’s most recent releases are with the internationally acclaimed “BKO” by Dirtmusic (recorded in Mali, Africa and released by Glitterhouse Records), the electro-acoustic instrumental “Between Hemispheres” (Gusstaff Records/MGM), and the French/USA ‘alt-country’ Lilium’s new album “Felt”, (Glitterhouse). With his trans-continental collective The True Spirit and his various Helixed productions and collaborations, Hugo defies any easy label and has staked out a creative territory entirely his own.

Hugo Race’s new solo album “Fatalists” is raw, lyrically driven and centred around Hugo’s deep, soulful vocals (critics often compare Hugo’s singing to artists like Mark Lanegan and Leonard Cohen). Recorded in Italy, guitarist Antonio Gramentieri (Sacri Cuori, Delavega), Arizonan violinist Vicky Brown (Desoto Caucus, Lilium, Calexico), percussionist Diego Sapignoli (Sacri Cuori, Delavega), and Dutch bassist Erik Van Loo (Willard Grant Conspiracy) create a melodic, acoustic sound that casts Hugo’s songwriting and voice in a whole new light.

Therapy?

Therapy? @ Block 33 | 16.03.13

Our favorite band from Ireland returns to Greece for the promotion of their new album “A Brief Crack Of Light”. After more than twenty years of travel and thirteen studio albums, Therapy? have managed to emerge as one of the most influential alternative rock bands. Albums like “Troublegum” and “Infernal Love” have been loved and became a huge commercial success, but at the same time had marked a whole generation of people who grew up in the hard sound of the 90’s.

Therapy? declare themselves as “children” of Motorhead, The Stooges, Killing Joke, and it doesn’t seem strange at all that they attract many music fans from the metal, punk, goth and pop scene. The only sure thing is that Andy Cairns and his team know very well what a rock ‘n’ roll concert is and this is what they promise in their upcoming appearances in Greece and Thessaloniki!

Max Cooper

Written by Admin on . Posted in

Max Cooper @ Block 33 | 07.03.13

The facts are easy to establish: Max Cooper has more than 50 original releases, tracks and remixes under his belt, from glitchy reinterpretations of big bands like Hot Chip and Au Revoir Simone to straight dancefloor 12″s like his breakthrough “Serie” originals and remixes for names like Agoria, Dominik Eulberg, Extrawelt, Pig and Dan, Kaiserdisco and Sasha.

The approach, meanwhile, is anything but simple. A melancholy composer whose live sets can raise blisters in a club, Max Cooper is as comfortable writing abstract electronica as he is writing dancefloor techno 12″s . A rationalist with an otherworldly, idealistic side, Cooper is also a wildly creative musician who until recently had a day job as a sober scientist.

And he’s swung from extreme to extreme since he first took to the decks 11 years ago.

As Max Cooper sees it, there’s conflict, but it’s part of the music-writing process. Each side of his personality sparks ideas off the other, and what remains constant is his own unique and starkly emotional style. From his breakthrough trilogy of “Serie” releases on Traum Schallplatten – the first released in 2009 and with each track inspired by a different scientific or mathematical concept – Cooper has built a reputation for one-off originals, killer remixes and challenging DJ and live sets.

Since his first release in 2007, his back catalogue now includes two mainstream Hype Machine smashes with reworks of Hot Chip and Portishead, several Beatport genre top 10s, work with the visual artists Whiskas fX and Nick Cobby and an increasing number of collaborations with artists a long distance from Cooper’s dancefloor beginnings.

With his time now mainly spent writing and touring music, Cooper continues to release his own originals, with ‘The End Of Reason’ described by Resident Advisor as “a truly sublime beatless tour de force that recalls Philip Glass, Aphex Twin’s most serene moments and even Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony No. 3”, and the UK’s IDJ magazine saying that Cooper “consistently proves himself to be one of the most peerlessly beautiful recording artists in modern dance music”. Stark, emotive and original, Cooper is, according to Skrufff.com, “One of the greatest new talents to emerge on the dance scene in the last few years”.

The National Fanfare of Kadebostany @ Principal Club Theater

The National Fanfare of Kadebostany, recently renamed, Kadebostany was founded in 2008 by its charismatic president, Kadebostan. Determined to develop the local cultural life and to represent the country beyond its borders, the president decides to put together a new orchestra.

In 2011, Kadebostany release its first album Songs from Kadebostany on the Swiss label Mental Groove. Since then, the band has performed in a variety of festivals and concert halls around the world such as Montreux-Jazz Festival, Mutek-Mexico, Wilde Renate-Berlin, giving more than 100 shows.

On the last night of February, the Principal Club Theater invites and introduces us to the surprisingly beautiful Kadebostany with all their surprises and their beautifully organized chaos! The sounds of cello, accordion, banjo, saxophone, bassoon. The noise and the dionysian euphoria! Getting ready for a party with pop, electronic, balkan, instrumental, oriental and pompous rythms and many others not described! And above all … getting ready for dance and madness!
