Quidam – Cirque du Soleil

Quidam – Cirque du Soleil @ PAOK Sports Arena | 30.09 – 05.10.14

At a glance

From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is a major Québec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 artists from more than 50 different countries.

Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents. Cirque du Soleil has 18 unique productions presented around the world in 2013.

Quidam

Young Zoé is bored; her parents, distant and apathetic, ignore her. Her life has lost all meaning. Seeking to fill the void of her existence, she slides into an imaginary world – the world of Quidam – where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul.

Quidam: a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner, a person rushing past and swallowed by the crowd. It could be anyone, anybody. Someone coming or going at the heart of our anonymous society. A member of the crowd, one of the silent majority. The one who cries out, sings and dreams within us all. This is the “quidam” whom this show allows to speak. This is the place that beckons – a place for dreaming and genuine relations where all quidams, by proclaiming their individuality, can finally emerge from anonymity.

What the media say about the show

“It was what we expect from the circus […] clowns, beautiful athletes, fabulous costumes, and remarkable feats of artistry, poise, sensuality and balance. ” – ReviewVancouver.org
“The sheer virtuosity of these performers is enough to leave your head spinning. ” – Mercury News
“…Quidam is […] a classic in the Cirque repertoire. It appeals to young and old alike, and it has mature and also youthful themes that most people can relate to.” – PressPlus1

Bonobo

Bonobo @ Fix Factory of Sound | 17.06.14

Simon Green, AKA Bonobo, is an artist very much at the peak of his powers. His 2013 album ‘The North Borders’ was the high watermark of his career to date: a masterful record, marrying Green’s inimitable melodic genius to cutting edge electronics, bass and drums.

An artist that constantly pushes himself outside of his musical comfort zone, Bonobo’s ranging personal tastes and regularly expanding range of synthesizers and instruments continue to take his productions to new levels. This outlook has earned him a reputation as one of the most pioneering figures in electronic music, in both his solo DJ sets and 12-piece live band shows.

All this comes as the result of over ten years hard work, and five albums that have honed Green’s skills. A born musician, Green – like many artists – expresses himself most articulately via his music. The result is that his work is always keenly felt, and always feels imperative. There are no wasted moments, and myriad great ones.

It’s tempting to relate Green’s yearning, emotive aesthetic to his upbringing in rural Hampshire. His move to Brighton is also an influence; his skill at drum programming perhaps harking back to his days DJing and producing in the small, musically fertile town. Under the initial guidance of Tru Thoughts’ Rob Luis and at nights such as Phonic:hoop, Bonobo found an early education in music.

His first album – 2000’s ‘Animal Magic’ – was released via Tru Thoughts before being picked up by Ninja Tune. It announced him as a serious talent; able to bring a true musician’s edge to electronic music, with all the freedom that skill allowed. His subsequent albums for Ninja, Dial M for Monkey and Days to Come, developed his sensibility, won him fans across the globe, and saw him develop his live show into a mesmeric re-working of his records.

He also worked hard as a DJ, a part of Green’s arsenal that perhaps truly came into its own at the same time as 2010’s Black Sands. 2012 saw him take the uptempo, club re-edits of Black Sands from a seminal Boiler Room performance in London to dance floors across the world, and unveil a new light show that further enhanced the impact of these stunning songs. A remix album was released featuring reworkings by fans and peers such as Machinedrum, Floating Points, Mark Pitchard, Lapalux and Falty DL.

Later the same year, he finally settled down in his New York studio to write his fifth album. The North Borders was another long stride forward – both a natural evolution and a continuation of the electronic palette of Black Sands. Thematic, resonant, addictive and perfectly formed, it’s a thrillingly coherent statement piece. With vocal features from no less than Erykah Badu, as well as Grey Reverend (Cinematic Orchestra) and Cornelia (Portico Quartet) it’s another finely balanced body of work, leaving room for the beautiful, rich productions themselves to breathe and shine.

Bonobo has a long history of unearthing new talent (Andreya Triana, Bajka) and The North Borders saw him do so once again. The startling vocals of new collaborator Szjerdene are sprinkled across the album, and Green has yet again found the perfect voice to express where he’s at.

Since the album’s release, Green has gone on to play over 140 sold out shows across four continents and 25 countries, selling over 500,000 tickets and wowing audiences with the hypnotic, extended live versions of his songs. He performed sold out shows at The Sydney Opera House and Brixton Academy, and his very own, day long festival at London’s Roundhouse. 2014 will see him and his band play both the iconic Coachella festival, and his largest UK show to date at Alexandra Palace in November…

It’s a full schedule and then some, but one that’s constantly rewarding for his fans, and perhaps proves that Bonobo is not only one of the world’s hardest working artists in electronic music, but also one of its best.

Hernan Cattaneo

Written by Admin on . Posted in

Hernan Cattaneo @ Club Le Freak | 17.05.14

Saturday, the 17th May, Dopamine Music of Nikko.Z celebrates one year of operation and in cooperation with Cosmic Expeditions, they present the world-known and house master Hernan Cattaneo.

For some DJs, music is more than just their passion or occupation – it’s the reason for their existence, the thing that keeps their world turning. Hernan Cattaneo is that special breed. Across his three decade journey through music, the legendary South American DJ has lived his life through the music that inspires him; inspiring thousands of electronic music lovers across the globe in the process.
As a respected label owner and producer, Cattaneo’s creative output remains as plentiful as ever. In just two years, his Sudbeat label has risen up as a leading light in melodic electronic music – regularly releasing material from names like Guy J, Henry Saiz, Nick Warren and Danny Howells. Hernan’s own tracks have provided other highlights in the label’s growing discography, with the Argentinean electronic music ambassador currently working on many studio projects.

Sharing these sounds – and those that inspire him – is at the heart of Hernan’s musical mission and is something he achieves through his relentless touring schedule. A resident at the UK’s longest running weekly event The Gallery @ London’s Ministry of Sound, Hernan’s DJ passport is stamped with the most respected dance events on the planet. From Serbia’s Exit to Las Vegas Electric Daisy Carnival, Spain’s Monegros to Holland’s Dance Valley, just about every major dance event has been graced by Hernan’s expertly weaved DJ journeys.

Blessed with a deeply ingrained knowledge of house music and its many electronic roots, Hernan’s own DJ journey can be traced back to the mid-80s in Buenos Aires. Fascinated by pioneering synth-pop and post-punk bands like Depeche Mode and New Order, Cattaneo soon became consumed by imported 12”s from the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Derrick May and Inner City.
Before long, the young music lover’s instinctive desire to DJ and share this new found love of Chicago and Detroit based sounds had lead him to his first – and now legendary – residency at Buenos Aires Clubland.

Clubland became the epicentre of Argentina’s burgeoning dance scene and Hernan rose up as its spiritual leader. It is here where he earned the respect – and friendship – of legendary DJs like John Digweed, Sasha, and – most significantly – Perfecto boss Paul Oakenfold, who invited Cattaneo to join him on Perfecto.

With the window of global opportunity opened, the Argentinean ambassador impressed at every turn. Club giants Cream soon recruited Cattaneo as their South American resident and were impressed enough to install him as international resident at Cream Liverpool & Ibiza. Rapidly gaining a taste and skill for the larger stage, Hernan soon followed with appearances at festivals like Nevada’s legendary Burning Man as well as key debuts at European institutions like Homelands, Bedrock, Pacha and Fabric. By the time, Hernan had mixed Perfecto’s first international mix CD – South America volume – he was confirmed as one of those rare DJs able to transform the DJ set into a true art form. Each individual set became a complex voyage through genres, emotions and sound.

Both a true DJs DJ and a people’s favourite, Hernan’s popularity has spiralled in the years since. Now respected as one of electronic music’s true legends, Cattaneo stands proud as a DJ, producer and ambassador of the highest pedigree. From John Digweed’s standard bearing Bedrock imprint to Manchester´s Hacienda Records or the legendary Ministry of Sound, a host of electronic music’s most pioneering labels have all called on Hernan’s studio skills at some point over the past years. He is also one of a select breed of DJs to have enjoyed more than a decade in the DJ Magazine Top 100 poll.

Known for his love of all music, regardless of genre, Hernan’s unique ability to weave stories from sounds are also responsible for some of the most celebrated mix CDs of recent years. Back in 2005, it spoke volumes on Hernan’s rising stock that he was hand-picked to succeed DJ legends like John Digweed, Deep Dish and Sasha on the aptly named Masters series. Seizing the opportunity, Hernan’s debut marked him out as a legend in his own right. Widely loved and acclaimed, his individual mix shifted seamlessly through genres and was coloured with both the rich seam of melody and lush lulling groove that his fans have come to love and know him for.

In the year since, he has followed with four more mix CDs for the globally renowned Renaissance – including their 50th ever album in 2009 and his acclaimed 2010 album ‘Parallel’, which featured no less than 12 of his own productions and remixes.

For the many thousands of music lovers that lap up their sounds the world over, these CDs provide a perfect snapshot of what Cattaneo is all about. It’s that human connection that drives Cattaneo further through music. And whether he’s taking crowd on an epic journey at festivals like Coachella, Exit and Creamfields or beaming his sounds across the globe through his weekly podcast and radio show on Delta FM 90.3, Buenos aires,he is able to be inspired and inspire in equal measure.

Tower Conference 2014

Working Women Successfully Navigating the Labyrinth: Stories of Empowerment.

About the Conference:

The concept behind the TOWER conference is about working women living in Greece who often come across figurative roadblocks along the way to success in the professional arena. Be it employees or entrepreneurs, many would argue, that they have to work harder than men in order to achieve their goals.

We believe that many women can relate to the above concepts but feel unsupported and “alone” in overcoming these barriers. The aim of our conference is to discuss the strategies that can help women in their efforts to advance their careers more effectively. Further, we hope that the women who attend can appreciate the potential in them and feel empowered by listening to stories of success by women who are recognized and highly esteemed in their professional field.

The conference is tailored to young women starting their careers, students who are about to enter the work force and to all those already working but wanting a change in their business lifestyle.

About TOWER:

Thessaloniki Organisation for Women’s Employment and Resources (TOWER) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation established in 2002 which focuses on career development for professional women in Thessaloniki. The members of our network come from around the world with a sizeable representation of repatriated Greeks.

Barem

Written by Admin on . Posted in

Barem @ Club Le Freak | 26.04.14

Saturday, April 26 Club Le Freak in collaboration with the Cosmic Expeditions present the artist who perfectly embodies the new generation of electronic music, BAREM from the international label MINUS. With the support of “NEXT FM 96.1”

With him
TONY G (TheRealRocknRolla)
GEORGE ADI (NON)
MARIA S (Cosmic Expeditions)

‘Everything you do in life affects your music if you do music with passion. It’s YOU in there, with everything good or bad inside’. – Barem

Mauricio Barembuem (aka Barem) perfectly personifies the new breed of electronic musician who has grown up in the digital age, using intuitive software programs like Reason and Ableton to spontaneously express ideas and emotions. On-line distribution has also made it possible for them to reach out and connect with audiences across the globe, no matter where they are – Buenos Aires for example, where Barem grew up amid the hustle and bustle of a city on the edge.

His teenage years were spent playing blues and rock guitar in bands but this always meant compromise. He longed for a purer form of self  expression and eventually found it through electronic music, fascinated in particular by the way some DJs could impose their own personal vision onto the music they played, elevating it to an art form. It was exactly the inspiration he needed and Barem was soon experimenting wi
th sampled loops and buying records (7th City, Spectral, Perlon and of course Minus). However, becoming a techno producer/DJ in Buenos Aires was easier said than done with gigs were few and far between. He was close to quitting a few times but found the right people at the right time and the solid advice they gave kept him motivated and focussed on his goal.

It was to be a defining moment and from that point on his induction into the scene was fast and frenetic. He released the Kleine EP on the free net label Unfoundsound in July 2005 with the track Suki grabbing the attention of many prominent DJs, before graduating to Foundsound with his first vinyl EP – Campo Madness in May 2006. Meanwhile, his relationship with Minus was already taking root. Richie Hawt in encouraged him to submit some demos after hooking up in Buenos Aires, one of which – Opal, appeared on the Min2Max LP which kick – started a period of non- stop touring across the US and Europe as demand for his live performances grew. Two Minus releases then followed in quick succession. 2007 saw the release of his Never Better Than Late EP before 2008’s superb Kolimar EP signalled a distinctive  evolution of his sound, adding organic, house inflected grooves to his repertoire. Listening to both EPs, it’s clear Barem concentrates most  energy into creating the powerful bass lines that underpin his work. His expansive use of reverb and delay create space for subtle percussive elements to skip and snake while distant, sometimes eerie melodies occur on random, secondary levels as a result of these interacting elements.

Some tracks just sound right from the first moment you experience them to the point where it’s often hard to appreciate the intricacies that lie within. Whether on outstanding remixes like Fuse’s Substance Abuse from last year’s Plus8100 retrospective or his recent outing on Foundsound with the epic Heyday, it’s all about keeping things simple and staying true to the old school, minimalist approach that first got  him hooked, his definition of which is both insightful and considered: ‘’…Minimal is not really a sound… it’s just a way of making music. It represents good taste, stylish sounds, the underground, afterhours… Whatever native roots you have, whatever music you like or liked in the past, it all fits in there and it’s not dying in my opinion. It’s just arrived at the point where we’ve rediscovered how free and amazing the  concept and the reasons behind it are…’’

Which goes some way to explain his decision in 2008 to step back from performing live to once again concentrate on DJing, infusing his sets  with warm, Latin rhythms as he blends his favourite tunes from a cross section of electronic genres past and present. His sets have graced  some of the biggest events around – the Detroit Music Festival, Timewarp, Miami, Ibiza, ADE…not to mention 2009’s Contakt special at  Brixton Academy and the Minus North American bus tour. Looking ahead, expect a lot more touring and even more production from Barem.
